Education is one of the strongest pathways to economic mobility — yet too many Latinx students, especially first‑generation youth, don’t see college as a place where they belong. Students have shared with us that they see themselves as “imposters.” Traditional community college outreach often misses the cultural, linguistic, socio- economic and family‑centered realities of our community.
In 2023 - 2024 ULV stepped in to change that. United Latino Voices partnered with Diablo Valley College (DVC) to bring a model rooted in cultural competence, language access, with deep respect for the role parents and DVC Latino college students could play in influencing college enrollment. Now in our third year, we are breaking down barriers that have historically kept Latinx students from enrolling in community college and helping families see higher education as both possible and within reach.
We use Spanish‑language DVC materials and bilingual presentations to ensure monolingual parents and students receive clear, accurate information — because language should never be a barrier to opportunity.
2024-25 Impact
The result: more families informed, more students inspired, and a college system beginning to shift their outreach practices to engage the Latinx community.
Our promotores, Community Engagement Coordinator, DVC interns, and student leaders from DREAMers and Latinx Student Alliances bring college information directly into the community. They share their stories. Together, they reach Latinx students at:
Their message is simple and powerful: college is for you.
Every month, ULV Promotores meet with parents of high school students to demystify financial aid, academic resources, and the college enrollment process. These conversations build trust, answer long‑standing questions, and strengthen the connection between Latinx families and Diablo Valley College.
